PIANO LESSONS FOR CHILDREN

Enjoyment

The ultimate aim of all piano lessons is for children to enjoy making music. Children explore the piano, move to music and play enjoyable pieces. When children feel success, they want to play more, and then go on to feel further success, building motivation and self-esteem.

Students look forward to performing to an audience in the annual Student Concert, usually held in the Summer Term.

Progression

Louise’s curriculum is based on three core areas, which build together to play a wide range of piano music with confidence and understanding.

1. Musicianship

This includes learning to ‘audiate’ which is the process by which the brain gives meaning to musical sounds. Louise uses the principles of Music Learning Theory (MLT) based on the research into how children learn music. Click here to find out more about Music Moves for Piano, a method based on this research.

2. Technique

This encompasses everything to do with how we approach the piano, from a relaxed posture, to creating a range of sounds by playing the keys in different ways, to playing fast. It is vital that this is taught from the beginning to avoid bad habits developing and becoming hard to fix. Louise uses principles from training with Penelope Roskell, a leading pianist in this area.

3. Understanding

This is about learning to read music notation and understand how music works. Notation reading is built up gradually so children gain confidence at all stages.

Lesson Cost 2023-2024 academic year

Lessons take place in Old Farm Park MK7

40 minute lesson weekly during school terms = £27 per lesson. Payable by the half term.

You may feel that 40 minutes is a long time for young children. During that lesson, children are actively moving and exploring the piano, and almost never notice that 40 minutes has gone by!

Students wishing to cover written theory within lessons as well as practical work, or those who are preparing for graded exams beyond G2 will need a 50 minute lesson costing £33.75 per lesson.
